The School of Serbian Language and Culture St. George was established out of the need of parents in our small community in Ireland to provide children with the opportunity to learn, improve, and use the Serbian language, as well as to become better acquainted with our wonderful Serbian culture. In this way, it helps foster the development of national identity, preserve our roots, and honor the legacy of our ancestors.
The curriculum is fundamentally based on the program prescribed by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Serbia for the education of children in the diaspora. Although grounded in this framework, the program has been developed and enhanced in several ways to enable students of different ages to learn the language, as well as to study the history, geography, and culture of the Serbian people in general, whether they live in Serbia or other Serbian lands.
Learning the Cyrillic alphabet begins from the very first level and right from the start. Experience has shown that our children appreciate and enjoy learning our script and recognize the importance of preserving and nurturing our Cyrillic heritage. The curriculum includes active learning, as well as learning through play and other engaging activities.
Both the children and the teacher enjoy organizing performances and events, which give them the opportunity to work hard preparing for their presentations and to proudly showcase their efforts to parents, relatives, and friends.
Participating in competitions represents an additional challenge for our students, which they truly enjoy.
A particular advantage is the possibility for students who live far from our church, where classes are held, or who are unable to attend lessons on Saturdays due to other commitments, to participate in online classes. Distance learning is conducted individually or in small groups, formed according to age and language proficiency level.
The curriculum also includes work between classes, giving students the opportunity to reinforce and better learn the material covered during lessons, as well as to spend as much time as possible working in the Serbian language.
Our goal is for our children to know their roots, to master the Serbian language at a native level, to be familiar with the culture of their ancestors, and to understand why they should be proud of their heritage and how to earn the pride of future generations.
A smile is the fundamental prerequisite for every lesson. Through stories and songs, we convey knowledge, messages, and lessons, creating the conditions and increasing the desire for further learning. A song is the best way to end a class, taking the good mood with us until the next lesson. Friends are an indispensable part of every class because not only do we share secrets and snacks, but together we are also happier and stronger. And we take pride in that.
